Phakphum is from a Red Lahu tribe and is the only child. He has ADHD and cannot yet communicate in Thai, therefore, he cannot study at his grade level, but needs to start with a Kindergarten program. He enjoys traveling and playing football. In his free time, he helps his grandmother by fetching water. He has never attended school before due to financial difficulties. He currently lives with his grandmother and stepfather, who struggles with substance abuse. His mother passed away due to kidney disease. Because of the Empower scholarship program, he now has the opportunity to begin his education.
